John, Duke of, third son of Henry IV., born about 1389. He was Protector of the Realm during the infancy of Henry VI., in whose reign he defeated the French several times. He fought against Joan of Arc. He purchased, and removed to London, the Royal Library of Paris, in which there were 900 books.
