In the Military Art, a very destructive species of fire-work, the best kind of which was invented by the late Sir WiUiam Congreve, and called after him the Congreve rocket. The body of the machine is cylindrical, and its head conical. It is filled with very inflammable materials; on the combustion of which, as in the common sky-rocket, the body is impelled forward with a continual acceleration. ROCKING or [s. 1074]
