JUNE-BERRY

or Service-berry, or Sugar-pear, or Grape-pear, or Sugarplum, the fruit of several species of the shad-bush, a shrub or small! tree found in all sections of temperate North America. It is of miniature apple style, resembling the haw, and ranges from diminutive up to the size of a small crab-apple, and from dark red, or purple, to black. It is of pecuhar interest in the West for it often formed the sole food of the Mormons and other pioneers in their days of hardships and privations. It is still an important part of the diet of the Indians of the Northwest, who value it both fresh and dried.
