Thucydides

(thu-sid'e-dez,) one of the most celebrated Greek historians, B. at Athens in the year 471, B c. He took part in the events of his times, but was self-banished for 20 years (fearing the punishment for want of succe in a military command intrusted to him), and did not return till Thrasybulus restored the old A then i an constitution, and soon afterwards died. His history of the former part of the Peloponnesian war is one of the most precious bequests of ancient Greece to modern times. [s. 895]
