(pl’-iv) \oliva, olive]. I. The olive-tree, Oliva europaea, of the natural order Oleacese, and its fruit. The fixed oil expre ed from the fruit is the Oleum olivae of the U. S. P. and B. P. It consists chiefly of olein and palmitin, and is used as a food and condiment; in medicine as a laxative; in the treatment of gall-stones; as an anthelmintic; as an emollient external application to wounds, burns, etc.; and as an ingredient of liniments, ointments, and plasters. 2.
