[L. a swelling.] i. Any swelling or tumefaction. 2. Neoplasm, a circumscribed growth, not inflammatory in character, arising from preexisting ti ue, but independent of the normal rate or laws of growth of such ti ue, and subserving no physiological function, ad'enoid t,, adenoma, ad'ipose t., lipoma, benign' t., one which does not form metastases and does not tend to recur after removal, cel'lular t., a tumor composed mainly of cells embedded in a greater or le er amount of homogeneous stroma, without distinct histoid structure, such as sarcoma, connec'tive-tis's ue t., histoid t., any t. of the connective-ti ue group, such as osteoma, fibroma, etc., including also sarcoma, dermoid t., see dermoid (2). epithe'lial t., or ganoid t., including also carcinoma, fibrocel'lular t., fibroma, heterol'ogous t., a t. composed of a ti ue unlike that from which it springs, his'tioid or his'toid t., a t. composed of a single ti ue, such as a, fibroma, homorogous t., a t. composed of ti ue of the same sort as that from which it springs, inn'ocent t., benign t. malig'nant t., cancer, a tumor producing metastases, and likely to recur after removal, mar'garoid t., cho les tea tom a, mixed t., one composed of two or more varieties of ti ue, or'ganoid t., a t. of complex structure, glandular in origin, containing epithelium, connective ti ue, etc. o 'eous t., osteoma. pap'illary t., papilloma, pearl t., cho les tea tom a. phantom t., see phantom. sand t., psammoma. seba'ceo us t., sebaceous cyst.* ter'atold t., teratoma, trans i'tlon t., a benign t. which recurs after removal and in its recurrence begins to a ume malignant characters, vas'cular t., angioma, villous t., papilloma, t. al'bus, white swelling, the granulating or fungous form of
