A swelling, especially a new growth, ( cystic or solid, malignant or non-malignant. A t. proper is a ma of cells, ti ues or organs resembling those normally present, but arranged atypically. It grows at the expense of the organism, without at the same time subserving any useful function. In a broader sense we may include any unusual swelling as a t., such as collections of fluid or gas, inflammatory and hemorrhagic swellings, and normal or hypertrophic increase in ti ue, • but the t. proper is a law unto itself or autonomous. T's are cla ified by Adami as: 1st. teratomata, or autonomous growths, the development of one individual within another, including various monstrosities such as fetal and visceral inclusions; 2d. terablastomata, or mixed t's of the kidney and various glands; 3d. autochthonous blastomata, or ordinary t's with an independent localized growth of ti ue cells of one order, such as fibromata or glandular, benign, or malignant t's. adenoid t.
