Anethol

( Chem.) An organic compound, formula C10H120, which forms the e ential constituent of the oils of anise, fennel, and tarragon. At ordinary temperatures it occurs as a solid ( anise - camphor, solid anethol), at higher ones as a volatile liquid ( liquid anethol). Also better designated as methyl ally phenol. An'gell, JAMES BURRILL, LL.D., born at Scituate, R. I., Jan. 7, 1829; graduated at Brown University, and studied for two years in Europe. From 1853 to 1860 he was Profe or of Modern Languages and Literature at Brown University; editor of the Providence Daily Journal, 1860-66; President of the University of Vermont, 1866-71; and since 1871 has been President of the University of Michigan. Ho served as U. S. minister to China 1880-82; and in September, 1887, was appointed a member of the U. S. Fishery Commi ion and Regent of the Smithsonian Institution. Appointed Minister to Turkey (1897), but the appointment seemed to be ill received by the Turkish government.
