Edwards, JONATHAN

1703-1758. Theologian and metaphysician, pastor at North amp ton. Ma ., 1727-50; Pres. Coll. N. J. 1758. In his Freedom of the Will, 1754, Original Sin, 1758, and other treatises he presented Calvin ism in a somewhat modified form, urging "determinism" as opposed to "nece itarianism" in volition. His doctrines were all powerful in New England for some time and changed the prevalent conception of free will. His son and namesake, 1745-1801, Pres.
