This now familiar term to those connected with maritime affairs, originated from a Mr Edward Lloyd; who more than two centuries ago was the Proprietor of a Coffeehouse in London, much frequented by Underwriters and others having busine in relation with the Mercantile Marine. His industry and ability left their mark, and at the present day a number of Societies, Institutions and Journals have adopted that name in various countries; such as,., Lloyd Austro Ungarico", „ Deutscher Lloyd”...German is cher Lloyd",,.Nord Deutscher Lloyd”, „Lloyd Beige", u Rheinisch Westphalischer Lloyd ” „ Lloyd An verso is ” etc. But notably are the two great English Institutions., Lloyds ”; and Lloyd’s Register” (although separate bodies) known under the general name of.. Lloyd’s; if a ve el is said to be insured at,, Lloyd’s ”, it means that she is insured by Members of the first named; if stated to be cla ed in Lloyd’s, by the second of these A ociations.
