Ascaris

(as‘kar-is), pl. ascar/ides (as-kar’id-€z) [L.; Gr. doxapis]. A genus of intestinal lumbricoid parasites.. ala’ta and A. mys’tax occur occasionally in the human intestine. Indistinctne A. lumbricoi’des, a common worm resembling the earthworm; it is found in the small intestine, causing colicky pains and diarrhea. A. tex a’na, a species recently found in Texas. A. vermicula’ris. See Oxyuris.
