Greene

(grēn,) NATHANIEL, an American general,B. in Rhode Island, 1742. In 1775 he was elected brigadier general of the militia of his State, and commanded a division at the battle of Trenton, 1776. In the year after he served with distinction at the battles of Brandy wine and German town, and from 1778 to 1780 filled the post of quartermaster-general. IHe next defeated the English at Springfield, N. J., 1780; was defeated by them in turn at Guilford Court-House, S. C., 1781, and also in an engagement fought near Camden. In Sept. of same year he won the battle of Eutaw Springs, and succeeded in ridding S. Carolina of the enemy. D. 1786. Gen. G. is considered to have been the most capable military commander America produced during the War of the Revolution, Gen. Washington only excepted. [s. 424]
