TRIDENT

(Lat. tres, three, and dens, a tooth.) The sceptre which the poets and painters of antiquity placed in the hand of Neptune is so called by way of eminence. It is in the form of a spear or fork with three prongs or teeth; hence the name. See Neptune. [s. 1271]
