Absolution

In Catholic theology, a judicial act of a validly ordained priest of competent jurisdiction, remitting the eternal punishment of mortal sins which a penitent has frankly confe ed with at least the imperfect repentance called attrition, and a firm resolution of avoiding them hereafter. In danger of death any priest, even if degraded, excommunicate or apostate, can absolve any penitent from any sin. Such a confe ion and absolution (implying suitable self-mortification), constitute the Sacrament of Penance.
