EPIGLOTTIS

An oval cartilage at the root of the tongue, which closes upon the superior opening of the larynx; its superior extremity is loose, and elevated by its own elasticity: it closes the aperture of the larynx when the tongue is drawn back in the act of deglutition. Its base has a ligamentous attachment to the base of the tongue, the thyroid cartilage, and the os hyoides. [s. 419]
