(kar-bon-a're.) [It., charcoal-burners.] (Hist.) A secret political brotherhood formed in Italy at the commencement of the 19th cent., having for its object the liberalization of the forms of govt. in that country. The C. fomented, and played a prominent part in, all the insurrections and revolutions which have agitated and subverted the states of Italy, since 1814. [s. 144]
