Ceiling

(seling.) [From L. cœlum, the heavens.] (Arch.) The upper part or roof of a room, being a layer or covering of plaster over laths, nailed on the bottom of the joists which bear the floor of the room next above; or on joists put up for that purpose where there is no upper room,-hence called ceiling-joists.
