General Court-Martial

Body of military officers, from 5 to 13, formed to try officers or enlisted men; convened, in time of peace, by a general commanding an army, a territorial division, or a department, or by a colonel commanding a separate department; in time of war, by the commander of a division, of an army corps, or of a separate brigade. Officers can be tried only by a general court-martial; for serious offenses soldiers may be tried either by a garrison or a field officer's court.
