A territorial division. (From the AngloS axon scyran, to divide s whence the verb to sheer.) In modern language, shire is synonjmous with county; but some smaller districts in the north of England retain the provincial appellation of shires: as Richmond shire, in the North Riding of Yorkshire; Hall am shire, or the manor of Hallam, in the West Riding, which is nearly coextensive with the parish of Sheffield.
