A territorial division. (From the Anglo-Saxon scyran, to divide; whence the verb to sheer.) In modern language, shire is synonymous with county; but some smaller districts in the north of England retain the provinci;il appellation of shires: as Kichmondshire, in the North Riding of Yorkshire; Ilallamsliire, or the manor of llallam, in tlw West Hilling, which is nearly coextensive with the parish of Sheffield.
