The staff of an army, including all officers above the rank of colonel; also all adjutants, inspectors, quartermasters, commi aries, engineers, ordnance officers, paymasters, surgeons, signal officers, judge advocates; also the noncommi ioned a istants of these officers. [French] Etoiles. — In fortification, small redoubts which are constructed by means of angles rentrant and angles sortant, having from five to eight salient points. Square redoubts have now largely superseded this species of fortification. Also written estoiles.
