Seabury, Samuel

(1729-1796), of New York, clergyman, was obnoxious to the colonists on account of the publication of pamphlets signed ‘‘A West chester Farmer,’’ entitled ‘‘Free Thoughts on the Proceedings of the Continental Congre ,”’ ‘‘ The Congre Canva ed,”’ and ‘A View of the Controversy between Great Britain and her Colonies.’”? He was made Bishop of Connecticut in 1784, one of the first three Episcopal bishops. He was prominent in the organization of the Episcopal Church in America.
