The formation of an artificial opening into the trachea; the operation of cutting into the trachea. inferior t., that which is performed below the isthmus of the thyroid. superior t., that in which an opening is made abov; the isthmus of the thyroid. t.-tube, a curv tube of metal for insertion into the incision made by tracheotomy.
