The operation of cutting into the trachea through the cricothyroid membrane, or through the cricoid cartilage and the upper part of the trachea. T., Inferior, one performed below the isthmus of the thyroid gland. T., Superior, one performed above the isthmus of the thyroid gland. T.-tube, a metal tube placed in the opening made in tracheotomy, and through which breathing is carried on. 631
