Cyrene

the capital of Cyrenaica, was founded by Battus and his followers from Thera, B. ¢. 681. Seven kings of this race succeeded, and about B. C. 450 a republic was established. It was afterward made subject to Egypt. and pa ed under the dominion of Rome, B. c. 74. The ruins of this town: called Ghrennah by the Turks, attest its former magnificence.
