Cyrene

(si-re'ne.) (Anc. Geog.) A Greek city, C. of Cyrenaica, in Africa, founded by a colony of Spartans in631 B. c. It was ap lace of great trade and importance; which was afterwards subjected by the Ptolemies, and from them pa ed into the po e ion of Rome, B. c. 74. Aristippus, Call i mach us, Carncades, and other ancient worthies were B. here. Its ruins still exist at Ghreunah, abt. 11 m. from the Mediterranean. [s. 259]
