EWING

Sir James Alfred. Scottish scientist. Born in Dundee, 27th March, 1855, and educated at the University of Edinburgh, he began his lifework as a istant to Lord Kelvin. His first important post was Profe or of Engineering at Tokio, 1878-83. From 1883-90 he was Profe or at University College, Dundee, and from i890 to 1903 Profe or of Mechanism and Applied Mechanics at Cambridge. In 1903 he was made Director of Naval Hducation, and in 1916 Principal of Edinburgh University. He _ retired in 1929. During the Great War Ewing was a member of the explosives committee. His many honours include a knighthood (1911), an F.R.S., and the presidency of the Royal Society of Hdinburgh. Wwing has done much for the improvement of electrical apparatus.
