(u'ing,) THOMAS, an American statesman and jurist, B. in Virginia, 1789, was admitted to the bar in 1816, and in 1831 took his seat in the U. S. Senate as a member of the Whig party. He was made secretary of the treasury under Gen. Harrison in 1840, a pos the retained under Mr. Tyler; became first secretary of the interior in 1849, and retired from public life in 1851. D. 1871.
