a tree. The wood is brittle and not very lasting, yet it is used by turners, joiners, and millwrights. The fine thin bark is employed for making baskets and band-boxes.: Beecher, Catherine Esther, at American author and educator, daughter of Lyman, and sister of Henry Ward Beecher, born in East hampton, L. 1, Sept. 6, 1800. The latter part of her life was devoted to or training teachers and supplying them to needy fields, especially in the Western and Southern States. She wrote numerous works un education and on the woman question. She died in Elmira, N. Y., May 12, 1878.
