(Fr. chef, Aearf.-) In Heraldry, the upper part of the escutcheon, divided into three points, dexter, middle, and sinister. A chief, as an ordinary, is a fe removed to the upper part of the escutcheon. Charges, in the situation of the chief, are described as " in chief." CHl' [s. 236]
