Ben-Hadad

or Benhaddad, the name of three kings of Syria. The first was a contemporary of Asa, King of the time of Ahab, King of Israel, I Kings, xx. The third at the time of Jehoahaz, King of xiii, Benham, Andrew Ellicott Kennedy, an American naval officer, born in New York, re 10, 18382; entered the navy in 1847; was commi ioned Rear-Admiral in 1890, and was retired in 1894. During the Civil War he served in the South Atlantic and West Gulf Blockading Squadrons. In April, 1893, he commanded one of the divisions in the great naval display at New York; in 1894, as commander of a squadron at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, he forced the commander of the insurgents’ squadron to raise the blockade of the city and to discontinue firing on American merchant ve els; and in 1898 was naval prize commi ioner in Savannah, Ga.
