Ethelred I

(ěth'el-rěd,) called the UNREADY, chief of the Heptarchy and king of We ex, reigned 866-871 A. D. During his reign the Danes made great conquests in England. E. was s. by his brother Alfred the Great (q. v.).-Ε. II., king of the Anglo-Saxons, 978-1016, B. his half-brother, Edward the Martyr. His reign was characterized by continual inroads of the Danes.
