Chem . C3H6O3=CH3CH(OH)-COOH. A monobasic, diatomic acid, discovered by Scheele in sour milk, and first recognized as a distinct acid by it has been mixed with water. lac to-glucose, s . Chem.: According to Fudakowski, a constituent been administered with advantage in chronic rheu- of milk sugar. lăc-tom-ě-ter, s . [Latin lac (gen it. lactis) = milk, and Eng. meter (q. v.).] Called also a galac- to meter. A species of hydrometer, graduated to show the comparative specific gravity and conse- quent value of different samples of milk. The instrument is a good evidence of the specific grav- ity of milk, and the specific gravity is a probable, but not positive, evidence of quality. Taken in connection with the per-cent. gla , which measures the per cent. of cream that rises, it is nearly a pos i- tive indicator of pure and watered milk. One form of the lactometer for ascertaining the amount of cream in milk consists of a tube with a funnel mouth for convenience in charging it, and having the upper portion graduated. The tube is about foot in length, and, being filled, the cream is allowed to rise, when its richne is determined by the number of graduated spaces occupied by the cream. Chem.: C5H8O2. Produced, together with lac- tide, by the dry distillation of lactic acid. It is a volatile liquid, po e ing an aromatic odor, and boiling at 92°. lăc-ton-ic, a. [Eng., ., lacton(e); -ic.] Chem.: Of or belonging to lactone. lactonic-acid, s . Chem.: C5H(OH)COOH. A monobasic acid, obtained by the oxidation of arabin and milk sugar. It is a deliquescent crystalline ma , melt- ing at 100°. It takes up two equivalents of metal from basic hydrates, but only one from carbonates. *lăc-tõr-, a . [Lat. lac (gen it. lactis ) Eng. adj. suff. -ory .] Lactiferous; lactary. readily than ordinary glucose. It has a greater dextro-rotary, power than dextrose, and reduces alanine salts with pota ic isocyanate, or by heat- alkaline cupric salts to cuprous oxide. It resembles ing lactyl urea with baric hydrate and decomposing dextrose in most of its reactions, but is dist in the resulting baric salt with sulphuric acid. It guished from it by giving no compound with sodic crystallizes in small rhombic prisms, which melt chloride, and by yielding lactonic and mucic acids at 15 when heated with hydrochloric acid it Chem. C4H6N2O22H2O. Lactyl urea. A com- pound, isomeric with methyl hydantoin, prepared by decomposing a mixture of aldehyde ammonia, hydrochloric acid, and extracting the brown prod- pota ic cyanide, and pota ic pseudo-cyanate with uct with ether alcohol. It forms transparent rhom- bic prisms, which, when anhydrous, melt at 145°. lăc-tox-1-1-mide, s. [Eng., ., lactoxyl , and imide.] [LACTIMIDE. lắc-tu-ca, s. [Lat., from lac =milk, referring to the milky juice of the plant when cut.] lacuna ma , insoluble in water, but soluble in alcohol and ether. On boiling with water, it is re-converted into lactic acid. la-cu-na ( pl. la-cu-na), s. [Lat.=a hollow, a depre ion.] I. Ordinary Language: 1. A small opening; a small pit or depre ion. 2. Anatomy (pl.): (1) Human : Open spaces, prolonged into canaliculi or delicate tubes finer than the smallest capillary ve els, occurring in bone. The lacunse have an average length of 1960 of an inch, and are about half as wide and a third as thick. They contain a minute granular substance found by Prof. Goodsir to be a germinal spot of nutritive center. Sixteen recent species are known and one fo il, the former from Norway, Britain, Spain, ., the latter from the Scottish glacial beds.
