CH..CHOH.COOH. a -hydroxyproprionic acid or ethyl i dene lactic acid; syrup, which decomposes when heated; produced, by a bacterial fermentation, from dextrose, milk sugar and cane sugar; used in pharmacy for making frunt syrups and in dyeing; present in sour milk. sourkraut. pickles, and gastric juice. See SARCOLACTIC ACID.
