Spencer, Herbert

b. at Derby, Eng., April 27, 1820; began work as a civil engineer, 1837; but since 1850 has been a literary man, and has won recognition as the author of a system of philosophy, in which the doctrine of evolution is applied to the different departments of thought and life. He began the series with his First Principles, London, 1862; then came Principles of Biology, 1867; Principles of Psychology, 1872; Principles of Sociology, 1877 sqq., part 6 1885; Principles of Morality, 18; Ecclesiastical Lnstitutions, 1885. *
