SHERMAN, JOHN

(1823-1900), an American politician, b. at Lancaster, Ohio, and admitted to the bar in 1844. He entered Congre in 1855 as a Republican, and in 1859 was chairman of the Committee of Ways and Means. From 1861-77 he was senator for Ohio, and after an interval from 1880-97. Unger President Hayes, 1877-81 he was Secretary of the Treasury, and under President McKinley, 1897-98, Sec. oi State.
