Ripley, George

Ms., 1802-1880. A Unitarian clergyman who was pastor in Boston, 1826-41, and then for several years the chief promoter of the famous Brook Farm experiment. In 1849 he became literary editor of The New York Tribune, and continued in that position until his death. With C. A. Dana, supra, he edited the American Cyclopædia, 1857-63, and also the revised edition of the same, 1873-76. His literary criticisms exerted a wide and beneficial influence.
