arctia

[Apparently from Gr. ἄρκτος ( ark tos ) = a bear, referring to the woolly character of the caterpillar; but Aga iz, in his Nomen clat or Zoologic us, derives it from ἀρκτεία (ark teia ) = consecration.] A genus of moths, the typical one of the family Arctiidæ. A. caja is the well-known and beautiful Tiger-moth. Its caterpillar is the "Woolly Bear."
