Pavia

(pa've-ah,) (anc. Ticinum,) a celebrated city of N. Italy, C. of p. of same name, on the Ticino, 19 m. S. of Milan. Its famous university is said to have been founded by Charlemagne in 774. Near this city, Feb. 24th, 1525, occurred the great battle between the Imperialists and the French, in which the latter were signally defeated, and their monarch, Francis I., taken prisoner. l'op. 28,670.
