In Mythology, the daughter of Nisus, king ef Megara, who threw herself into the sea for love of Minos, king of Crete, and was turned into a bird. Also a poetical monster, half man half dragon, who inhabited the coast of Italy opposite C'harybdis, according to the well-known legend in the Ody ey. The modern town of Scilla stands near the cave dreaded by the early navigators as the habitation of this monster. [s. 1119]
