French political hymn, composed, words and music, by Rouget de Lisle, April 24, 1792; originally called Chant de guerre pour l'Armée du Rhin; arranged for instruments, and sung by the Garde Nation ale as they entered Paris on July 10, and while they marched against the Tuileries Aug. 10. Louis Philippe pensioned the author.
