Joint

Fi ure, or one of a system of parallel fi ures. in rock, resulting from contraction on cooling or drying, or from pre ure. Two or more intersecting systems of joints are sometimes seen in the same quarry. Joints are often at right angles to the planes of stratification, as the partings dividing columnar basalt into prisms.
