It is employed by inhalation, occasionally internally, as a stimulant and antispasmodic in colic, bronchial irritation, and syncope. Dose, 30 min. (2. c.c.). Called also acetic ether. @. alcohol, the ordinary alcohol of commerce and pharmacy. See alcohol. e. bromid, a colorle volatile liquid, C,H;Br, of swectish taste and cthereal odor; an unsafe anesthetic: used like chloroform, especially for minor operations; also as a sedative in hysteria, epilepsy, etc. @. carbamate. Sce urethan.. carbanilid. Sce euphorin. ©. chiorid, a colorle , inflammable liquid, C,H,Cl, used as a local anesthetic and stimulant. It is applied in the form of a spray, impelled from the containing tube by the heat of the hand. Called also Aydrochloric cther. @. Giacetate, a material which has been used in urinary tests. Θ. formate, a volatile antispasmodic and anesthetic liquid, C,H,O,. Called also formic cther. e. hydrate, ordinary or ethylic alcohol. e@. iodid, a colorle liquid, C,H;I: used as an antispasmodic, alterative, and resorbent by inhalation and by the mouth for relieving asthma, dyspnea, etc. Dose, 15 min. (1 c.c.). Called also Aydriodic ether. @. nitrate has been employed as a vasodilator, but is not very effective. e. nitrite, nitrous ether, C;H,NO,; a liquid which is mixed with alcohol to form sweet spirit of niter (spiri’tus ath’eris nitro'si), which is used as a diuretic, dliaphoretic, anodyne, and antispasmodic. Dose, 20-00 min. (1.33-4 c.c.). @. phenacetin, a_ yellow oil, C,H,(OC,H,)N(C,H;)CH;CO: hypnotic. 9. phenyl cinch on in ate, a yellowish powder: used to promote the elimination of uric acid. ©. pyoktanin, an auramin derivative: actively antiseptic. Θ. salicylate, the salicylic acid ester of ethyl alcohol, C.H,.O,;: used like the salicylates. Dose, 5-10 min. (9.3-0.6 c.c.), three or four times a day. @. sulphid, a strong-smelling principle which exists in dogs’ urine.
