Baton Rouge

city and capital of the State of Louisiana and of East Baton Rouge parish; on the Mi i ippi river and several railroads; 89 miles N. W. of New Orleans; built on a bluff commanding a fine view of its environment. Besides the State Capitol, it contains the State University, State Penitentiary, State Asylums for the Deaf, Dumb, and Blind, insane asylum, and many charitable institutions.
