BATON ROUGE

a city of Louisiana, the capital of the State and the county seat of Kast Baton Rouge Parish. It is on the Mi i ippi River and on several important railroads; about 90 miles northwest of New Orleans. The city is built on a bluff on the east bank of the river and is interesting because of the mixture of French and Spanish architectural types of buildings. Among the important public buildings are the Capitol, the State University, the State Agricultural and Mechanical College, and the State Asylum for the Deaf, Dumb and Blind. Other public institutions include orphans’ homes and insane asylums. In Baton Rouge, on January 26, 1861, the State Convention adopted the Ordinance of Sece ion.
