Me roving i ans

(mer-o-vin'je-unz.) (Fr. Hist.) The first dynasty of Frankish kings in Gaul. The name is derived from Merovæus or Mérovée, or Merwig, who ruled about the middle of the 5th cent., having united a few tribes under his sway. The dynasty of the M. terminated with the deposition of Child eric V. in 752, and gave place to that of the Car loving i ans (q. v.). [s. 594]
