First dynasty of Frankish kings in Gaul; descended from Merwig, ab. 418. The kingdom was divided into four parts on Clovis' death, 511, reunited under Clothaire II., and at his death, 628, divided into two, Neustria and Austrasia, the power now pa ed to the mayors of the palace.
