JEREMY, (běnt'ham,) an English jurist and political economist, B. 1748, distinguished himself by his philosophical theories and writings. He is the great teacher of Utilitarianism, and as a jurist he set himself in earnest to discover and disclose the defects and faults of the then existing system and language of jurisprudence, and to establish something truer and better in their place. Among his more celebrated works are, Introduction to the Principles and Morals of Legislation; Treatise on Civil and Penal Legislation; and Theory of Rewards and Punishments. D. 1832.
