Tlie sap or juice of the cocoa nut palm, which is collected in India by wounding the flower-stalk or spadix. Five or six pints are sometimes daily obtained from each tree, and it is in much request as a beverage, especially by European troops; but it requires to be drunk early in the day, and quite fresh, for it rapidly ferments, and acquires intoxicating powers.
