Boat usually formed of a tree-trunk hollowed out by cutting or burning, and propelled by paddles held perpendicularly instead of oars horizontally. It is found among natives of both hemispheres and all zones. The Laps and Esquimaux sew skins over bone framework and form half-decked canoes. In N.
